Regulatory Oversight is Crucial for China’s Power Markets |
|
China’s nascent electricity markets have the potential to create powerful new incentives for clean energy investment and coal generation retirement – and boost efficiency of grid operations. Ensuring that markets actually deliver these outcomes depends on implementing workable market regulation and market monitoring – particularly given that the power sector is dominated by a limited number of state-owned generators. RAP’s article responds to requests from decision-makers in China for international perspectives and was recently published in Southern Grid’s Energy Observer magazine.

Electrification and Power Sector Reform: Coordinating Dual Challenges

China has emerged as a world leader in certain aspects of electrification, notably uptake of electrified transportation. Continued electrification in China may bring major benefits, including emissions reductions and cost savings. However, unlocking these benefits of electrification will depend, in part, on power sector reform efforts. Max Dupuy and Fritz Kahrl discuss recommendations for coordinating electrification and power sector reform, with a focus on promoting flexibility of electrified end uses.
